Another of the participants attending the conference in the Vatican on adult stem cell research is Doctor David Prentice, Professor of Molecular Genetics and Bioethics expert at the John Paul II Institute of the Catholic University of America. Unlike the much-hyped embryonic stem cells, he says adult stem cells are already proving their worth in clinical trials but this important message is not getting out to the general public. Dr Prentice says ” very few people .. including some profesionals … understand that adult stem cells are already treating thousands of people every year for dozens of different of diseases… and the list is growing each year.”

Asked about the potential for adult stem cells, Dr Prentice replies: “I really believe the sky is the limit for adult stem cells” but says the sector needs more publicity and more resources to realise its potential. When it comes to the use of embryonic stem cells, he says, apart from the ethical issues, they “still have many practical problems” including….. “tumour growth and forming the wrong tissues in the wrong place in the body.”

Many U.S. fertility clinics don’t tell egg donors that embryos made from their eggs may end up being used in stem cell research, according to a new government survey.

That’s despite widespread opposition to such research, which is considered morally offensive by a third of Americans, researchers write in the journal Fertility and Sterility.

They found that among 100 fertility clinics, two said they didn’t have a consent form for women donating eggs.

Of the 66 clinics that sent in a consent form and said they used excess embryos for research, just 20 told women about that. And only three of 38 clinics that used some embryos for stem cell research in particular disclosed that to donors.

In recent times, there have been many news stories about patients visiting clinics for stem cell injection therapy. These clinics are located in various parts of the world, but the main interest has been on the results these so called ‘experimental’ treatments have been getting.

Not to be confused with embryonic stem cells (ESC) taken from embryos, the adult stem cells used in the clinics are collected from the patients bone marrow over a period of weeks. Stored in a controlled environment until a large enough number have been collected, they are then re-injected into the patient at the target areas.

Many of these clinics have had excellent results with a whole myriad of conditions including Multiple Sclerosis (MS), heart disease, spinal conditions, even cancers. It seems about the only drawback is the cost : upwards of $15,000 for each injection of between 1-5 million stem cells and the time: treatment takes between 6-8 weeks.

There have also been several cases involving dogs and horses receiving injections to help with conditions such as arthritis, hip dysplasia and lymphoma. Understandably, many pet owners have been over joyed.

Either way you look at it, these results offer great hope for many sufferers of these conditions, but the high prices and time consuming treatments keep it out of reach for many. This has led to some cases of patients taking risks with their health at clinics not adhering to stringent professional conditions and procedures.

What isn’t so wide spread just yet is the alternative. A recent peer-reviewed clinical study has proven that a patented concentrate of AFA (aphanizomenon flos-aquae) extract showed an increase of 25% in the number of circulating stem cells after 1 hour.

This is completely different to targetted stem cell injections, as once in the blood stream, these stem cells will go where ever the body needs them. They can’t all be funnelled into one particular area of the body.

For the average person, this equates to around 3-4 million cells — well and truly comparable with an injection — but safely, naturally and without the need to travel anywhere, spend thousands of dollars or take several months off.
